The 9U Riptide have been working hard since November and they came to play with their first game matched up against area rivals the Mukilteo Mavericks. The Riptide started off the day with back to back singles from Grady and Keaton. Cayden was able to draw a walk and with an added fielder’s choice and two errors the Riptide took a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the first. The Riptide were able to hold the Mavericks to one hit as they went into the second. Nolan and Spencer both scored via wild pitches after reaching on an error and walking respectively. In the bottom of the second, the Mavericks were able to post their first run after the lead-off batter was hit by the pitch and made it around to score. In the top of the third, the Riptide answered right back after Grady reached on a base hit, Keaton walked and Brooks drove them both in on a single. Jacob earned an RBI after Brooks scored on a 6-1 play. The Mavericks were able to catch a break in the bottom of the third as back to back walked resulted in two runs, but the Riptide finished the inning strong with two strikeouts and stranding a runner on third. In the fourth, both teams were able to score one more run each bringing the score to 10-4 in favor of the Riptide. The fifth started off with Channing drawing a lead-off walk and Evan and Ax matching up with consecutive singles to bring the score to 12-4. Keaton was hit by the pitch and Cayden and Brooks singled – increasing the score to 15-4. The bottom of the fifth was the final half inning of game one and though the Mavericks rallied with two base hits and two runs, they came up short and the Riptide beat the Mavericks convincingly 15-6. 9U Game 2 – Lake Stevens Riptide vs. Stilly Valley Venom Coming off a strong win, the Riptide faced a second area rival – the Stilly Valley Venom. The first at bat was a swinging strikeout by Grady, but Keaton picked him up in a big way with a hard-hit double. With two outs, Cayden was able to get on board on an error and after a walk and fielder’s choice was the sole run in the first inning for either team. Going into the second, the Charles was able to draw the walk which was followed by Nolan getting hit and advancing Charles to scoring position. Spencer walked and Evan and Ax came up big with a single each – punching the score to 6-0. After a quick four-batter bottom of two, Venom were unable to stop the momentum Riptide was building heading into the middle innings. Cayden started it off with a single but was unable to score and was the first out of the inning. Brooks reached first on balls and Jacob was able to knock him in with a double up the left-field line. Nicholas sacrificed the runner to third with Faith coming to the plate. With a 1-1 count, Faith smacked a pitch into the gap in right center field for a triple. Charles grounded out to short for the final out, but not before the Riptide posted two more runs to make it an 8-0 ballgame. On the other side of the ball, the Riptide pitching came in with a lead off strikeout, but Venom was able to scratch back a little by posting three runs on two hits. But the Riptide answered right back in the top of the fourth with hits from Nolan, Channing, and Grady, as well as, coupled with two walks and two hit-by-pitch at bats, the Riptide added seven more runs to push the score to 15-3. The fifth inning added two more runs for the Riptide with Grady adding his first single of the game. Venom did their best to try and swing the game into their favor in the bottom of the fifth with a solid two-out double, but came up short with a ground out to third for the last out. The top of six saw the Riptide add five more runs to the total after singles by Nicholas, Spencer and Ax and three walks. After a long day of play, Venom lost steam in the bottom of the sixth and couldn’t pull out of the run deficit put up by the Lake Stevens Riptide. The Riptide beat the Venom with a strong 20-3 win.
